Frequently asked questions

What healthcare licenses does my company need?

The licenses you need depend on your business type and the states where you operate. Telehealth platforms need state telehealth permits and provider licenses in each state where patients are located. Healthcare facilities need state facility licenses, CMS certification, and often Joint Commission accreditation. Medical device companies need FDA registration, state device licenses, and distribution permits. Pharmacies need state pharmacy licenses and DEA registration for controlled substances. We analyze your business model and identify every license required across all target states.

How does telehealth licensing work across multiple states?

Telehealth licensing requires providers to be licensed in the state where the patient is located at the time of the encounter — not where the provider is physically based. This means a telehealth platform operating nationally may need licenses in all 50 states plus DC. The Interstate Medical Licensure Compact (IMLC) streamlines the process for physicians across 40+ member states, but each state still issues its own license. We manage multi-state telehealth licensing end-to-end, including compact enrollment, individual state applications, and ongoing renewals.

What is HIPAA compliance and who needs it?

HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) applies to covered entities (healthcare providers, health plans, healthcare clearinghouses) and their business associates — any company that handles protected health information (PHI). Compliance requires implementing the Privacy Rule (patient data access controls), Security Rule (technical safeguards for electronic PHI), and Breach Notification Rule. Business Associate Agreements (BAAs) must be in place with all vendors who access PHI. We conduct comprehensive HIPAA compliance audits, develop compliance programs, and manage ongoing monitoring.

How does DEA registration work for healthcare providers?

The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) requires registration for any provider or facility that manufactures, distributes, dispenses, or administers controlled substances (Schedules I-V). Each practice location needs its own DEA registration. Registration must be renewed every three years. State controlled substance licenses are separate and required in addition to federal DEA registration. We handle both federal DEA registration and state-level controlled substance licensing across all jurisdictions.
